What makes us different?
Kitchens/Baths
Between the flooring, plumbing, and press wood cabinets these rooms tend to have some of the more dangerous levels of toxins in the air.
As with all of our projects we use glues, adhesives and paints that contain low or no VOCs. We use wheatstraw particleboard for our counter underlayments, floors, or for custom cabinets. We use Bamboo, Paperstone, or recycled glass tile as some alternatives to different counters. Both Bamboo and paperstone make very nice counter tops and are comparable to granite in their durability, while giveing your kitchen or bath a unique look. We use many different materials for flooring, from Marmoleum, to Bamboo, to Cork, to Mountain Tamarak (straight from Missoula MT). We also prefer to use cabinets that are not made from traditional particleboard that are formaldahyde free. We also use cabinets that have an ESP stamp from the KCMA.
Painting
Paint off-gasses quite a bit especially for the first few months after repainting. We use low odor and low VOC paints, stains, sealants and plasters. These products are just as good if not better than typical paints and stains and are comparable in price. The only difference is you don't have to stink up your house or inhale paint fumes just to give your house a face lift.
Did you Know?
- Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids. VOCs include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have short- and long-term adverse health effects. Concentrations of many VOCs are consistently higher indoors (up to ten times higher) than outdoors. VOCs are emitted by a wide array of products numbering in the thousands. Examples include: paints and lacquers, paint strippers, cleaning supplies, pesticides, building materials and furnishings, and glues and adhesives.
- The ability of organic chemicals to cause health effects varies greatly from those that are highly toxic, to those with no known health effect. As with other pollutants, the extent and nature of the health effect will depend on many factors including level of exposure and length of time exposed. Eye and respiratory tract irritation, headaches, dizziness, visual disorders, and memory impairment are among the immediate symptoms that some people have experienced soon after exposure to some organics. At present, not much is known about what health effects occur from the levels of organics usually found in homes. Many organic compounds are known to cause cancer in animals; some are suspected of causing, or are known to cause, cancer in humans.
- Studies have found that levels of several VOCs average 2 to 5 times higher indoors than outdoors. During and for several hours immediately after certain activities, such as paint stripping, levels may be 1,000 times background outdoor levels.
